So today, Kaffy and I were chatting whilst I took a break from the story that WILL NOT END, and we got on something I've been pondering the past couple nights: appearances -- specifically, what my posts sound like. (Ok, I've been navel gazing. Like you don't.) And Kaffy, who pulls few punches with me, said that if she didn't know me and started reading me, she would think I was pessimistic. I was like, "Really?" and she said, "Yeah."
"REALLY!?"
"Um, yeah."
"Huh. No, really!?"
"Yeeesss."
I'm still a little perplexed by that. I mean, sunshine and kittens I ain't, I realize (unless, of course, I'm in the presence of sunshine and kittens), but a bonafide pessimist to me would also have to be miserable with their life and everything in it, and that I'm not. In fact, family bullshit aside, I'd say I'm the happiest I've ever been, so I kinda wonder why that doesn't show through more. Not that I'm particularly worried about it; it's just kinda curious to me in that thinking-aloud kinda way.
But here's something to ponder: If someone feels the need to tell you how well they do something, what does that say? I know someone like that -- we'll call her "Trainwreck" for our purposes here. And we'd start talking about work and stuff, and at least once a month, she'd have to tell me how good a writer she is. Which she was, if a little wordy for her chosen profession. But I just remember being like, "Yeah, and if you keep telling yourself that ..."
Meanwhile, I'm seriously digging the new Daft Punk tune that Apple's using for its latest iPod commercial. They used it on The OC a few weeks ago, too, and that's when I started digging it. Quite sexual, or maybe it was just all the chicks in the teeny bikinis. Anyone got a copy they want to send my way?
I think because you use your blog to vent (and who doesn't???) and that you are quite vicious in your rantings that I'd think you're pessimisstic. I don't think you are in real life, but in your blog? Yeah. A lot of your posts are venting rants. But, they're entertaining and if they help you purge those feelings, then keep ranting, chicky!
I know, sweetie pie -- I wasn't trying to call you out or anything. I guess I just tend to forget that my inner bitch is ... well, bitchier than most.
Personally? I blame it on the gene pool.
I think we all rant on our blogs. Lord knows I do. It's what we do. It's therapeutic... so I agree with Kaffy... what may come across here is not who you really are.
I don't think you sound *too* pessimistic, tho. Even when you are talking about the fam.... it just sounds like you are working your way through some things..
Most blogs, by their nature are captious and considering that "captious" is the #1 entry under the definition for cynical, I think this is a fairer assessment. So it's not so much you as it is the forum in which we interact with you.
Besides, nobody wants to read about happiness and puppies in a blog. (Well, maybe certain puppies...) Conflict and strife make for a much better read, helping the blogger to vent stress and pressure and giving the reader either a sense of purpose in offering advice, or a sense of relief that their lives might actually not be as bad as they previously thought.
It's the reason soap operas and their primetime cousins exist. If "Lost" was "Cast Away: The Series" do you really think it would have become as successful as it has? Shit, even 7th Heaven has drama and that's supposed to be some wholesome show about a preacher's family. Closer to Footloose if you ask me at times.
Distrust of human intention and motivation is a far cry from out-and-out negativism. I'm sure your profession contributes significantly to this as well. Don't sweat it, we all love you regardless. Otherwise we'd have left long ago and joined some cult and been halfway to the Antari Nebula by now with the Hale-Bopp aliens.
